Years ago, I started Bahamas4u as a simple forum. Here you can see a screenshot of that forum:
It was a place where travellers, expats and locals shared convenient information about the islands: ferry routes, mailboats, check-in times, prices, and how to move between islands that did not have obvious connections.
The focus was always on real experiences and concrete details, not on glossy travel stories.

The forum years: questions, routes and mailboats
On the old forum, most discussions started with a clear question. People wanted to know:
- How to travel between Fort Lauderdale and Freeport.
- Whether the ferry to Bimini was running on a specific day. (Or if it was running at all)
- How reliable certain crossings were in bad weather.
- Which mailboats connected the smaller Outer Islands.
Long threads built up around topics that official sites often did not fully cover. The forum filled in many gaps: not just “is there a ferry”, but how it worked in practice, when to arrive at the terminal, what to expect on board, and how long it really took to get off the ship and out of the port.
Over time, that created a shared, practical knowledge base. If you searched the forum you could often find
a detailed answer from someone who had done the same trip a few weeks earlier. That was the strength of the
old Bahamas4u: direct, experience-based information.
Why the forum changed
As social media grew, forum activity slowly declined. Conversations moved to closed groups and private chats,
and the old forum software did not fit that new way of communicating. At the same time, it became harder for
new visitors to find information in thousands of older posts.
Instead of trying to keep an ageing forum online, I decided to keep the core idea and change the format.
The goal stayed the same: help people understand how to travel by ferry in and around the Bahamas, and what to expect once they arrive.
Bahamas4u today: structured guidance instead of long threads
Today Bahamas4u is no longer a forum, but the intention behind the site has not changed. I now provide
structured guides that bring together the most essential information that used to be scattered across
different discussions.
If you are planning a trip starting on the Florida side, you can use the page about Fort Lauderdale is a starting point.
There, I focus on the role of the port, ferry departures to the Bahamas, basic boarding procedures and onward
connections on the Florida side. On the Bahamian side, the pages about Freeport and Bimini give a practical overview of what you can expect when you arrive: orientation around the port area, onward travel options and essential points for day trips versus more extended stays.
Instead of forum posts about individual sailing times, there is now a central schedule overview where I group the key ferry timings. This makes it easier to scan routes and plan combinations without digging through old comments. For the broader conditions that influence crossings, the weather page explains patterns and seasons that matter for ferry travellers, so you can understand why some days or months are more challenging than others.
Mailboats and smaller islands
One of the things the forum did well was collecting scattered information about smaller islands and the
Bahamas mailboat system. Many travellers were interested in those routes, but found it difficult to get
a clear picture of how they worked. That part of the project now resides on dedicated pages instead of lengthy threads.
The page about the Bahamas mailboat network brings together basic information about how mailboats operate, why they matter for the Out Islands, and what you should keep in mind if you plan to use them as a traveller. It does not replace local knowledge, but it gives a structured starting point that is easier to update than forum posts.
For specific islands that were often discussed but rarely documented clearly, I now maintain separate
pages such as Bond’s Cay and Cat Cay. These pages provide basic orientation, including the island’s location, its connections to other islands or the mainland, and its role within a broader itinerary. In the forum era, that information was spread out over many posts; now it is easier to find in one place.
Helping ferry travellers prepare their trip
The current site focuses on two main things:
- Before you travel: understanding routes, schedules, weather patterns and practical steps such as check-in and boarding.
- Once you arrive, basic orientation, onward transport, and what is realistic to do on a day trip versus a longer stay.
To clarify, I have created an overview of frequently asked questions on the FAQ page. Many of these questions originated from the forum, including the timing between flights and ferries, what to expect with luggage, and how much time is needed in the terminal. The FAQ turns those scattered answers into short, direct explanations.

The old Bahamas4u forum belonged to a different era of the internet, but the need behind it remains.
Travellers still seek clear, experience-based guidance on how to navigate the transition between Florida and the Bahamas, as well as how to combine ferries, mailboats, and local transportation.
By turning the forum into a structured site, I can update information more easily and keep key pages current.
At the same time, I continue the original goal of Bahamas4u: to offer practical, honest and route-focused information for people who want to travel to and within the Bahamas by sea.
