Ferrying locally in the Bahamas is not easy to plan, prepare well, and check the company’s websites for updates. 

To Bimini island

From Fort Lauderdale to Bimini

Departure from Fort Lauderdale: ~ 09 AM (varies by season; sometimes 08 AM or 10 AM)

Arrival in Bimini (North Bimini): ~ 11 AM (± 2 h trip)

Frequency: ~3 weekly sailings (Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays); summer may include Mondays or Saturdays

From Fort Lauderdale to Freeport

Departure: ~ 09 AM

Arrival: ~ 12 PM (trip approx 3 h) (Return: ~ 06 PM; arrival Fort Lauderdale ~ 09 PM 0

Frequency: ~2 per week

Covers routes like Nassau ↔ Spanish Wells ↔ Harbour Island and others (Eleuthera, Abaco, etc.) These routes change a lot, be sure to check the website for recent info. 

  • Typical schedules:

    • Nassau 08:00 AM → Spanish Wells 10:10 AM → Harbour Island ~10:45 AM

    • Return mid to late afternoon

  • Limited weekend freight/courier service (M/V Bo Hengy III)

Using the Mailboats on the Bahamas

Mail Boats

The Mail Boat Company Ltd. serves domestic communities in The Bahamas, carrying mail, goods, and passengers.

Many blogposts and others experienced these boats however: they are slow and locals use them to get around the islands, if you want to book them be sure to make calls and organize everything as good as you can. It’s all very difficult to schedule. 

Schedules vary per route; bookings via dockmaster’s office (e.g. Nassau +242 393‑1064)

Flying remains a strong option

We love ferries, especially to get to Freeport or to Bimini, a ferry might be the best choice, but for inter-island travel, flying might be the better option. 

The mailboats are difficult to plan, overbooked and difficult to book. Bahamas Ferries might be a better option, but they don’t ‘ferry’ to all islands.
