Antonius Robert's "Sacred Space" Exhibit, Worth a Look In Nassau!
Antonius Roberts, a sculpture from Nassau, has created large outdoor sculptures in Nassau, which are worth checking out if visiting that city. Roberts, who built his reputation on oils and acrylics, created his first public art, Sacred Space, as an historical memorial to the heritage site where many of the first African slaves landed. The site, adjacent to a once-thriving plantation and replete with historic relics, became a battleground between a private developer and public interest. Roberts' work helped call attention to it. The public interest won.
"It was important for me," he said then as The Bahamas government was preparing to purchase the property, "to create within this space rather than bringing sculptures to it. This place, like others, has its own almost tangible energy and beauty to be discovered, uncovered and tapped into." And that is what he did even more successfully with the taller trees at Welcome, the intersection that has become Nassau's most gawked at, admired and revered corner.
